The Asia eHealth Information Network (AeHIN) officially launched its HL7 FHIR Fundamentals Training on June 5, 2025. This marks the first time AeHIN organized an official Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) training directly from HL7. The initiative stems from a regional partnership agreement signed between AeHIN and HL7 International, effective from May 2024 to December 2025.

The primary goal of this training is to strengthen the technical capacity of AeHIN members in understanding and implementing HL7 FHIR — the global standard for digital health data interoperability. Designed with a region-based approach, the program aligns with the local challenges and needs across Asia.

The training features:

  • Official materials and assessments from HL7
  • HL7-certified AeHIN members as course facilitators
  • Course delivery via the HL7 e-learning platform
  • An affordable and inclusive fee model

Before the training officially began, a Participant Orientation was held on May 29, 2025, attended by 160 participants from various Asian countries. In his opening remarks, Dr. Alvin Marcelo, convener of the AeHIN Community of Interoperability Labs, highlighted that this effort is a tangible realization of the two-year agreement with HL7, aimed at building a competent regional community in HL7 FHIR. Diego Kaminker, Deputy Chief Standards Implementation Officer at HL7 International, also emphasized that this is just the starting point of a long-term collaboration to strengthen local capacities.

This training is a strategic step toward reinforcing regional networks in the standardization of digital health data, accelerating the adoption of safe, efficient, and interoperable health systems. As the first of its kind in the region, the program also opens the door for future training cohorts in the years to come.
