The Asia eHealth Information Network (AeHIN), in collaboration with HL7 International, hosted and organized the HL7 FHIR® Fundamentals course for its members in Bangladesh, Bhutan, Indonesia, Laos, the Maldives, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam. This initiative is part of the regional partnership between AeHIN and HL7 aimed at strengthening capacity for global health data interoperability. It launched with a two-day orientation held on 28–29 May 2025, followed by a structured, self-paced online program from 5 June to 5 August 2025.
With strong representation from Indonesia, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand, 77 % of the participants (146) successfully completed all course requirements and received HL7-issued certificates, demonstrating a high level of commitment across the cohort. The course equipped participants with foundational knowledge and practical skills to implement HL7® FHIR® (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) standards in real-world health information systems.
Participants progressed through four thematic units, supported by live Q&A sessions that enabled direct interaction with FHIR experts. This hybrid approach, blending self-directed study with expert-guided engagement, helped bridge the gap between theory and practice in digital health interoperability.

Course modules completed by the successful trainees
The success of this year’s course reflects the growing demand for practical, affordable, and high-quality interoperability training in the region. Participants came from diverse professional backgrounds, including public health agencies, hospitals, academia, and the private sector. This rich background and representation show the cross-sectoral value of FHIR in enabling better interoperable health information systems.
By delivering practical, accessible training on FHIR, the widely used global standard for health data exchange, AeHIN and HL7 are empowering health workforce across the Asia-Pacific region to actively engage and contribute in standards-based digital health transformation.
The partnership agreement between HL7 and AeHIN made it possible to offer this course at a discounted rate.
